SneakPeek Pro: Better InDesign Previews

We've gotten some emails asking about better previews from InDesign when using SneakPeek Pro. It turns out there is a simple way to get better previews, and here's how…

Go to InDesign's Preferences
(InDesign > Preferences > File Handling… ⌘K)

You can select between Small, Medium (Default), Large and Extra Large. We've found that going from a Medium preview for our sample 8-1/2" x 11" to Large only added about 59KB and from Large to Extra Large another 427KB. Your results may vary, but you may want to start off by storing the Large preview depending on your needs.

Here are a few samples to show what we found:

256 Pixel Preview
Medium (Default)

512 Pixel Preview
Large

1,024 Pixel Preview
Extra Large

On a standard US Letter document, Medium previews began to Greek text below 24 point. On both the Large and Extra Large previews, text was still legible at 12 point. Further testing showed the Large preview would Greek text at 10 point and the Extra Large preview didn't start 'til 4 point text. That said, the Large preview should suffice for most.

That's all there is to it. This, of course, won't affect your previously saved documents. But moving forward, this should give you a better experience working with InDesign.

Oh… Just one more thing. In case you've forgotten what Quick Look looks like without SneakPeek Pro, here it is:

Will SneakPeak Pro be updated for InDesign CS5's ability to show multiple page previews and linked images?

Matheau said...

We'll be releasing that this week, very possibly tomorrow.

SneakPeek Pro 1.4, a free update, has been released. Along with setting the preview size as explained in this blog, you'll also want to change the number of pages previewed when using InDesign CS5. It's in the same window.

Also new to 1.4 is multi-page previews for some Illustrator documents saved with PDF compatibility and an updated User Interface. Check out the "Online Demo" to see it in action.

Do I need Illustrator, InDesign or any of the other Adobe programs for this to work? If I get this for my account manager who needs to view my files, but not open them in Adobe software, will this work for her?

Thanks!

Hi,
Why can't I get SneakPeek Pro 1.4.1? All links to download it seem to be broken.

One of the great things about SneakPeek Pro is that you don't need to have installed, or even own, any of the products for the files it supports.

That includes, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Freehand MX, etc.

my main question is wondering if the quick look will auto show the jpg or whatever in its actual size? or a quick way to see its actual size....i hate hitting space bar on a horizontal it it be actual size..then when i get to a vertical, it tries to fit it in the horizontal size...which is too small..

Look promising - but unfortunately we do need this on Windows :-/

Matheau said...

@Mark: Sorry for the delay in getting back to you… What you're describing is a function of Quick Look. Initial previews get sizing priority and previews after that just try to fit in its window.

@l-i-n-k: Thanks for the input. I'll consider this an app request. :)

Is there any way to improve/generate a new thumbnail if you don't have InDesign available?

Can we see multiple pages in quicklook with SneakPeek?

I have downloaded the free demo, but can't seem to open the .ase file. I don't know what to do other than double click on the .ase file I'm trying to preview, which doesn't work. What else am I supposed to be doing?

Help! Catherine Todd

Matheau said...

@Josh: No. Unfortunately, you have to have InDesign to resave the file with the updated thumbnail settings.

@schaal: Yes. SneakPeek Pro will view multiple page previews on Adobe Illustrator documents (saved with PDF compatibility) and InDesign documents (CS5 and later) that have multiple page previews saved.

@Catherine Todd: This works within Quick Look, so you should be able to see ASE previews of files by selecting an ASE file in Finder and hitting the space bar on your keyboard. It'll work in other areas as well, like Cover Flow, Preview Icons, etc. Everywhere Quick Look works.

Thanks, Matheau. Will give that trick a try. You wrote:
